The Sunday School in Melbourne Vietnamese Evangelical Church has been educating the children in our community for many years. Our goal as teachers in this ministry is to provide opportunities for children (from 2 to 12 years old) to worship, learn, praise and serve God.
Employing a tried and tested teaching method, we pray that the children will learn about and accept the Lord as their personal Saviour.
This ministry is led by a coordinator, under the guidance and supervision of the Church’s senior Pastor. Sunday School teachers are from various age groups. Most of our teachers have attended formal training at a theological college. For those who have not had the chance to do so, the minimum requirement is the completion of a Bible Correspondence Course. They have all been trained for an extended period of time before entering a formal teaching role. A meeting is held each term for all teachers, allowing for sharing and learning within the ministry. We also look towards to the future, continually preparing young teachers for eventual service in His work.
Teachers and students
We have a large group of approximately 35 children, who are looked after by an able team of teachers and assistants. They are divided into 4 different classes, according to their age:
Love: 2 years old – Kindergarten
Joy: Prep – Year 1
Peace: Year 2 – Year 4
Patience: Year 5 – Year 6
Since the number of children varies every year, the size of each class might fluctuate to facilitate efficient and more personalised teaching.
Children under the age of 2 are accompanied by parents. They share the same room with Love. In the future, we plan for children of this particular age groups to have their own, specific room.
The Sunday School program is divided into 4 terms. At the end of each term, the children will have 2 weeks of School Holiday Program. It is an opportunity for children to participate in a common program regardless of their age.
The Sunday School classes start at 10.30am, running concurrently with the Church service. The children participate in the worship segment with the congregation, before moving outside for further praise and worship.
The Sunday School teachers finish their lessons at approximately 12.15 – 12.30 pm.
We conduct a special program on Good Friday and Christmas. Besides these 2 occasions, the children also enjoy a yearly picnic, family camp, cooking sessions and much more! Children’s Day is held in July every year, providing an opportunity for the children to participate in the main service in a more active role.
Materials and teaching methods
The extensive resources used in this ministry (Growing Faith) have been provided by Regular Baptist Press. The well designed materials include images, memory verses, songs and worksheets.
The lessons are prepared and delivered at a level appropriate to the children of each specific age group. The materials are in English; however, we always endeavour to use both Vietnamese and English in our teaching.
The children are taught how to pray using the Word of God. They are prayed for and encouraged to apply what they have learnt into their daily lives, as according to James 1:22:
“Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”
Each child is given a personal folder at the beginning of the year. They are encouraged to keep all their homework and provided materials. Starting from Year 2, the children are also encouraged to bring their own Bible every Sunday. All stationery needs are provided for in Sunday School hour.
